Guide 4: AFTERCARE FOLLOWUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARENTS FROM DR HARRIS

Thank you for trusting Dr Martin Harris CircumcisionLondon with your baby’s care. Following these aftercare guidelines is essential to ensure a smooth, comfortable recovery and to promote proper healing.

During the recovery period, ensure your baby stays well-hydrated with regular feeds, and allow them plenty of rest.

1. General Wound Care & Hygiene

Hand Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap before touching your baby's nappy area or managing their dressings.
Keep the Area Clean & Dry: Follow the specific timeline provided in your discharge notes regarding dressings. Generally, you may bathe your baby 3 days after the procedure (two days after the change of dressing on the day following the procedure).
Avoid Unnecessary Touching: To prevent introducing bacteria, do not touch the wound directly unless you are actively cleaning or dressing it.
Vaseline Application: Starting from the first dressing change (the day after surgery), apply a generous dollop of Vaseline to the tip of the penis with every nappy change for the first 3 months, or as instructed by Dr. Harris. This prevents the sensitive area from rubbing and sticking to the nappy.

2. What to Expect (Wound Appearance)

Initial Healing Phase: Initial healing typically takes around 21 days. Healing typically normally takes around six weeks.
Understanding the Appearance: The healing wound from a surgical circumcision (with stitches) looks quite different from a traditional circumcision. Yellowish film, mild swelling, or minor discoloration can be a normal part of the healing process.
Reassure Family Members: If relatives or carers are unfamiliar with how a surgical circumcision heals, please reassure them—or feel free to contact Dr. Harris directly for guidance.

3. Pain Management

Administer any pain relief strictly according to the dosage and frequency prescribed or recommended by Dr. Harris.
Keeping your baby comfortable, well-fed, and rested will significantly aid their recovery.

4. Monitoring & Signs of Infection

Please inspect the wound regularly during nappy changes. Contact Dr. Harris promptly if you notice any of the following signs of potential infection:

Expanding redness (erythema) or significant swelling around the site
Cloudlike, yellow, or foul-smelling discharge (pus)
Persistent distress, unusual crying, or signs of increased pain
A fever or elevated temperature

When can I give my baby a bath?

You can give your baby a full sponge bath or gentle bath 3 days after the procedure, unless Dr. Harris specifically instructs you otherwise in your discharge notes. Prior to day 3, keep the area clean using warm water and cotton wool during nappy changes.

How much Vaseline should I use, and for how long?

Starting from the first dressing change (the day after surgery), apply a generous, thick dollop of Vaseline directly to the tip of the penis at every single nappy change. You should continue this for 3 months to protect the delicate skin and prevent the penis from rubbing and sticking to the nappy.

Is it normal to see a yellowish or beige film on the wound?

Yes, this is completely normal. Because stitches are not used, the body creates a protective, gel-like layer (called an exudate) over the wound as it heals. It is typically beige, yellow, or off-white. This is part of the natural healing process and is not pus or an infection.

How long does complete healing take?

Initial surface healing typically takes 3 weeks. Healing typically takes 6 weeks. However, the surrounding skin ring ("rim" or "ridge") especially at point 6 o'clock, will continue to soften, smooth out, and settle over a longer period.

What should I do if another healthcare professional says the wound looks infected?

Traditional, stitchless circumcisions heal with a temporary raw appearance that some doctors or nurses—who are only familiar with stitched surgical procedures—may misinterpret. If a doctor, nurse, or health visitor expresses concern about normal healing exudate, please reassure them or contact Dr. Harris directly so he can assess the area.

What signs of infection should I actually look out for?

While yellowish film is normal, you should contact Dr. Harris if you notice:

Spreading redness or severe, worsening swelling around the base or shaft.
Foul-smelling, cloudy pus oozing from the site.
Persistent distress, high-pitched crying, or signs that your baby is in continuous pain.
A fever or elevated body temperature.
