Guide 2: Informed Consent for Baby Circumcision

Giving your informed, written consent is an essential part of the preparation for your baby’s circumcision procedure with Dr. Martin Harris.

Dr. Harris will explain the consent process in detail during your consultation and answer any questions you may have before asking for your agreement to proceed. This guidance is adapted from the standards set by Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London.

What is the Purpose of the Surgical Consent Form?

To proceed with any surgical procedure, including circumcision, both parents must sign a consent form. This signature confirms that you have:

  • Been fully informed about the procedure.

  • Discussed the benefits and potential risks.

  • Understood and agreed to the planned treatment.

This signed document is a vital component of safe care, ensuring parents are fully informed about all aspects of their baby's health and well-being before making a decision.

How Consent Works

Consent can be given in various ways, but for surgical procedures like circumcision, written consent is required. By signing the form, you confirm that you have received all relevant details regarding:

  • The surgical procedure and what to expect.

  • The expected benefits and potential risks.

  • Alternative options (including non-surgical approaches).

  • The normal postoperative healing process.

Authorisation & Medico-Legal Purpose

  • Authorisation: Your signatures grant formal permission for Dr. Harris to perform the surgery.

  • Medico-Legal Assurance: The signed form serves as an official legal record for both the parents and the practitioner, documenting that the decision to proceed was fully informed and mutually agreed upon.

What the Circumcision Consent Form Includes

  1. Patient Details: Your baby’s name, date of birth, and relevant medical history (including antenatal development, delivery details, and health at birth).

  2. Procedure Details: Clear information explaining the circumcision procedure, the reasons for it, and what it involves.

  3. Local Anesthetic Details: Information on the type and application of local anesthesia used to keep your baby comfortable.

  4. Risks and Benefits: A comprehensive summary of potential benefits alongside possible complications, all discussed in detail with Dr. Harris.

  5. Alternatives: Information on alternative options, including delaying or choosing not to proceed with the surgery.

  6. Parental Understanding: A formal statement confirming that you understand the information provided and that all your questions have been satisfactorily answered.

  7. Signatures: Signatures from the parents confirming agreement to proceed after full discussion.

Dr Harris was extremely communicative through every stage of the circumcision process, before during and after and made us feel very comfortable with the procedure that was undertaken. The aftercare was excellent with Dr Harris laying out key instructions for how to proceed after the procedure and has kept in contact weeks after the circumcision was performed to ensure the healing is occurring as normal

Dr Martin Harris was brilliant, this was our first circumcision, so quite apprehensive, however the reassurance before, during and after the procedure was exceptional, and the aftercare went above and beyond. Would highly recommend his service.
