Guide 1: Consent

Giving your permission and written consent for your baby circumcision process

This page is about your giving consent as parents to the circumcision process of your baby by Dr Harris. The page is based on information at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. Dr Harris will explain about consent and how to go about asking for agreement to treatment.

 

What is the meaning of consent in the context of healthcare? It is the process of giving your permission to proceed with the care and treatment. You can give your consent in various different ways.

 

There are different and varying circumstances for the practitioner to request you give consent. Please be aware and informed the importance of ensuring that have all the needed and required information so that you will be in a position to decide and make you feel you made the right decision.

 

Consent should be given only voluntarily; there should be no pressure from anyone regarding you giving consent and permission.

 

Consent should be informed in that you should have all the information you need to make a balanced decision, including the risks, benefits and any alternatives (including doing nothing) to the proposed treatment.

Guide 3 : Immediate Aftercare Circumcision surgery

AFTERCARE NOTES FOR PARENTS FROM DR HARRIS

Immediately after the circumcision procedure, Dr Harris will give written instructions and advice to the Parents to cover over the first 24 hours following circumcision procedure. Dr Harris will advises Parents to read these notes very carefully.

 For the first 24 hours after the circumcision procedure , Dr Harris advises to monitor closely for the initial post operative recovery. During this first 24 hours post operatively, focus on managing the pain with written instruction  for the administration of analgesia (pain relief). Also to observe clotting of the wound so any dry blood will appear as pale pink within the nappy on urination; this clears within hours.

 

Postoperative aftercare include:

  • Monitoring Signs:

Regular feeding is essential for calming the baby . Please feed on demand for the first 24 hours, irrespective of the feeding pattern prior to circumcision surgery. Dr Harris will give advice on winding.

 

  • Pain management:

Pain is a common and expected part of the postoperative period. Pain medications are administered to manage discomfort. Please follow Dr Harris written advice for administration of analgesia (pain relief)

  • Wound Care:

At circumcision procedure, the wound has a dressing applied to cause clotting and protection from infection (redness, swelling, pus). Please leave this dressing for 24 hours, to be changed by Dr Harris

  • Preventing Complications:

Measures to bleeding and infection including wound bandaging and use of antiseptics and antibiotics .

  • Position of baby:

Dr Harris advises to position baby on side or back, not on the front.

 

  • Nappy care:

Dr Harris will advise regarding nappy care, soiling and changing.

 

  • What to expect:

Dr Harris will give you an instruction and advice leaflet what to expect within the immediate aftercare period following circumcision surgery first 24 hours.

FOLLOWUP NOTES FOR PARENTS FROM DR HARRIS


Dr Harris will change the dressing the day after the circumcision procedure and give the Parents Followup notes.


 


Dr Harris will explain what to expect, such as the normal appearance of the healing wound after the circumcision operation.


 


Dr Harris will explain about bathing the baby. what to expect, such as the normal appearance of the healing wound after the circumcision operation.


 


Dr Harris will explain about the healing process and the normal healing appearance.


 


Dr Harris will explain about a dollop of Vaseline on the meatus (hole) with each nappy change for three months.


 


Dr Harris will explain to you how he would like you to keep in contact.
