Parental Consent for Baby Circumcision: What Parents Need to Know

Stage 2 of the Circumcision Process

At Circumcision London, ensuring that parents are fully informed, confident, and comfortable with their decision is a fundamental principle of our care. Giving your written, informed consent is an essential safety step before any procedure takes place.

This guide explains what informed consent means, who must provide it, the benefits and risks of elective baby circumcision, and your right to change your mind at any stage.

1. What Informed Consent Means

Circumcision is an elective, permanent, and irreversible procedure. Consent is the voluntary process of giving your formal permission for Dr Martin Harris to perform the procedure after receiving complete, transparent information.

Before signing a consent form, Dr Harris will ensure you have been provided with clear information regarding:

  • The Procedure: Exactly how the procedure is performed using topical local anaesthetics.

  • Benefits & Limitations: The expected clinical, personal, or cultural outcomes and their boundaries.

  • Risks & Possible Complications: A clear explanation of potential surgical risks and how they are managed.

  • Alternatives: Options available to you, including delaying the procedure or choosing not to proceed.

  • Aftercare & Recovery: What normal healing looks like and how to care for your baby post-procedure.

  • Emergency Guidance: Clear instructions on when and how to seek urgent medical advice.

Key Reassurance: Signing a consent form does not obligate you to proceed. You retain the absolute right to withdraw consent and cancel or postpone the procedure at any point before it begins.

2. Who Must Provide Consent?

For elective baby circumcision, Dr Harris requires written consent from both parents where both hold formal legal parental responsibility.

Consent & Legal Requirements:

  • Dual Parental Agreement: The consent form records your baby’s details, relevant medical history, the planned procedure, local anaesthetic arrangements, and confirmation from both parents that all questions have been answered.

  • Alternative Guardianship: Where legal parental responsibility is held by another individual or legal body, formal documentation verifying guardianship must be reviewed and confirmed beforehand.

  • When Procedures Are Deferred: If there is parental disagreement, uncertainty regarding legal responsibility, or any safeguarding query, the procedure will not move forward and will be deferred.

3. Reasons & Potential Benefits of Circumcision

Families consider baby circumcision for a variety of personal, cultural, religious (such as traditional Brit Milah / Bris), or medical reasons.

Potential health benefits discussed during consultation may include:

  • Reduced risk of recurrent foreskin inflammation, tightness (phimosis), or local infection later in life.

  • A lowered incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) during infancy.

  • Easier long-term genital hygiene.

Note: While these potential clinical benefits exist, many uncircumcised boys remain entirely healthy throughout life. Circumcision is elective, and no specific cosmetic or health outcome can be guaranteed.

4. Understanding the Risks & Possible Complications

While baby circumcision performed by an experienced doctor is typically straightforward, all surgical procedures carry potential risks. Dr Harris ensures parents have a balanced, realistic understanding of possible complications, which include:

  • Normal Recovery Symptoms: Mild discomfort, irritability, temporary swelling, redness, or localized bruising during the initial healing window.

  • Bleeding: Minor oozing is normal, though significant bleeding requiring clinical attention occurs rarely.

  • Infection: A risk in any surgical wound, which is minimized using aseptic technique and correct post-procedure nappy hygiene.

  • Healing & Skin Considerations: The possibility of uneven skin alignment, temporary skin bridges/adhesions, or dissatisfaction with final cosmetic appearance.

  • Foreskin Positioning: Removal of slightly too much or too little skin, occasionally requiring secondary review or revision later in life.

  • Extremely Rare Risks: Rare structural complications involving the glans or urethral opening.

Dr Harris will go over all aftercare protocols with you to ensure you feel entirely confident identifying normal healing versus signs that require prompt medical review.

5. You Can Change Your Mind at Any Time

The consent form serves to record our open clinical discussion and document your informed agreement at that time. It never replaces your freedom to ask further questions, consult with family or medical advisors, or pause the process.

If at any moment before the procedure starts you feel hesitant, wish to ask further questions, or decide to cancel, Dr Harris will support your decision completely without hesitation.

Next Steps in the Process

Frequently Asked Questions about Consent for you for Your Baby’s Circumcision

Will Dr Harris discuss consent with us personally?

Yes. Dr Harris will discuss the proposed circumcision with you personally before the procedure. He will explain what the procedure involves, the technique planned, local anaesthetic and pain relief, expected healing, aftercare, potential risks and complications, and any available alternatives.

You will have time to ask questions and decide whether you wish to proceed.

How is consent given?

Consent is given in writing before the procedure takes place. The consent form confirms that you have discussed the procedure with Dr Harris, understand the information provided and agree for the circumcision to go ahead.

When will we be asked to sign the consent form?

Consent is discussed and completed at the appointment, after Dr Harris has assessed your baby and answered your questions. The procedure will not begin until the consent process is complete.

Who needs to provide consent?

The clinic asks for both parents to be involved in the decision and, wherever possible, to attend and sign the consent form. It is important that the person or people providing consent have parental responsibility for the baby. The procedure cannot go ahead until the consent arrangements have been appropriately clarified both Parents signed consent form.

What information will be covered before I give consent?

Before you sign the consent form, Dr Harris will discuss:

  • Why circumcision is being considered for your baby
  • Whether your baby is suitable for the procedure
  • The surgical technique to be used
  • Local anaesthetic and pain-relief arrangements
  • Expected recovery and aftercare
  • Possible risks, including bleeding, infection, swelling, discomfort, wound-healing problems and an unsatisfactory cosmetic result
  • When to seek medical advice after the procedure
  • Whether there are alternatives, including choosing not to proceed

Can I ask questions before signing the form?

Yes. Please ask any questions you may have. It is important that you feel informed and comfortable with the decision before giving consent for your baby’s circumcision.

What if I change my mind?

You may withdraw consent at any point before the procedure begins. If you decide not to proceed, please let Dr Harris know as soon as possible. Your decision will be respected, and it will not affect any future care or treatment your child receives.

What happens if we are unsure on the day?
There is no obligation to proceed. If you would like more time to consider the decision, discuss concerns or seek further advice, the procedure can be postponed or cancelled before it begins.
